Koi fish are bred in a variety of styles and colors, this kind being the “goshiki” a style that merges 5 colors of white, red, black, navy and gray. Each scale for the koi is laid on the ornament, one by one.

The fins are made by hand from netting and added to the fish with the attachment points being covered by a larger piece of scale. The eyes are gold and black and made of the same paint as the scales. Once everything is in place, the koi is covered with clear paint to seal everything together and then sprayed with a protective finish and given its hanger ribbon to complete the look.
